History of the Tarot
Tarot card readings date back a long time, possibly as early as the 1300s in Italy. Researchers are unsure of exactly when and how they were introduced, although it’s thought that the form in which we know them today originated from a Catholic Priest called Eliphas Levi who lived in the late 1700s and 1800s. Levi studied Catholicism as well as Judaism, Hinduism, Caballism and other Masonic religions. He also studied astrology, astronomy and metaphysics.
Levi created a deck of cards that incorporated his understanding of religion and elements like fire, water, earth, air and other astrological symbols and events. His tarot cards are believed to have been used as a tool for spiritual enlightenment, self-improvement and self-awareness.
In the late 1800s, AE Waite published a new version of Levi’s tarot cards call the Rider-Waite deck, which is the most widely used tarot card version used today. Waite began using the cards to predict possible future events and the use of the cards has grown ever since.
